The General Union of Students in Iraq, supported by fellow IDFN members as well as non-members, succeeded in implementing a free public transport scheme for University students in Baghdad, funded by the private sector.
Inspired by a system put in place in Kurdistan in 1997, the students collected signatures from supporters around Iraq and lobbied parliament members and officials from the Ministry of Higher Education and the City council of Baghdad. Generally, at least 10% of Iraqi students now have increased access to subsidies for transport and other education-related expenses.
